Make Rules, Set Time Limits For Using TV & Computer

Does your child have a TV in her bedroom? How much time does she spend online?

New studies give even more reasons why parents need to limit their child’s “screen time”—the total hours spent watching TV, playing video games, or browsing online.

Here are five steps for parents to follow:

  1. Pay close attention to how your family uses media. Where are the TVs and computers located? How many hours does your child spend watching TV and browsing online?

  2. Learn more. New video games come out each month. Find out what your child is playing. Ask other parents what they recommend.

  3. Make a plan. Take the TV out of your child’s bedroom. Put the computer where you can see it.

Figure out how much screen time you want for your child. Then establish a screen-time schedule for your child and stick to it.

  4. Offer choices. Suggest other activities for your child when the TV and the computer are turned off.

  5. Teach your child how to be a critical viewer. Encourage her to ask questions about what she sees and reads.
